The mastic tree grows in only one place on the whole planet--the southern part of the Greek island Chios. No research has been able to explain the reason for this phenomenon, although, reports note that the uniqueness of the earth in the southern region of Chios can be explained by the volcanoes beneath the sea in that area. According to the local tradition, the "tear" of the mastic tree represents the tears shed for the tortures inflicted on Saint Isidoros in 253 A.D. under the mastic tree.
